Master in Translation Studies
Programme Objectives
The programme aims to foster a new generation of translators and interpreters with a professional outlook, linguistic and cultural competences, as well as the skills and confidence to meet the challenges of both the local and regional translation markets in the years to come. It also aims to provide a comprehensive and in-depth study of the multifaceted issues in translation. On completion of the programme, students are expected to have competence in the use of information technology including familiarity with translation software. They will have well developed intellectual qualities of reasoning, analysis and creativity; skills of research, enquiry and independent learning, which will be demonstrated in their translation project reports or their MA thesis.
Admission Requirments

I. All applicants should normally hold a Bachelor's Degree with an overall result of Grade B- (73% minimum), in Portuguese Studies, English Studies or in related subjects.

II. All applicants will be required to take a proficiency entrance test of language and translation and be interviewed by the programme co-ordinator and a member of the teaching staff.

Language Requirements

I. Prospective students should be native speakers of one of the languages. Exceptions may be considered if a candidate who is not a native speaker holds an official higher certificate of both languages of the intended programme

II. Non-local applicants for the Chinese-English and Portuguese-English sections, who are not native speakers of English, should have one of the following: a) TOEFL score minimum 100 (= 600 in paper based test) ; b) IELTS score minimum 6.5; c) CET Band 6 Certificate for non-English Majors or Band 8 certificate for English Majors.

III. Non-local applicants for the Chinese-English and Portuguese-Chinese sections, who are not native speakers of Chinese, should have the HSK Certificate (National Chinese Exam, higher level).

IV. Non-local applicants for the Portuguese-Chinese and Portuguese-English sections, who are not native speakers of Portuguese, should have one of the following:

a) International certificates issued by Portugual (DUPLE or DAPLE
b) International certificates issued by Brazil(CELPE-BRAS nível pleno)) The native speakers of Portuguese should have passed the respective national examination of the 12th form (i.e. Pre-university level vestibular).

Course Duration
Two academic years.
Graduation Requirements
Students must complete 27 credits of course work in the first year and 3 credits of course work in the second year with an overall result of Grade B-(73% minimum). After submit a master thesis with no less than 10000 words and succeed in the oral defence of their Master thesis within the duration of study will be awarded Master of Arts in Translation Studies.
Language of Instruction

I. Wherever possible, both Chinese and Portuguese as well as English will be used as the languages of instruction in the Compulsory courses so as to accommodate students working with all language pairs and to save teaching resources.

II. Elective courses (Group A and Group B) will be conducted in the relevant language(s).

III. Students can focus on any ONE of the three language pairs (P-C; P-E, E-C) to improve their translation/interpretation skills.

IV. The thesis should be written in either Chinese, Portuguese or English
