PROGRAMME INFORMATION

A. Master's Degree Programmes

1. Educational Administration

Objectives

The Master of Education in Educational Administration Programme is designed primarily for those interested in learning the theory, practice and research of educational administration. It is hoped that a combination of theory and practice will help students develop leadership skills and enable them to cope more effectively with the complex demands of current education situation.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year programme for both full-time and part-time students. The design of the programme requires students to successfully complete a total of 4 compulsory 3-credit courses and 4 elective courses before working on a thesis in the second year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent preferably on education specialization and related. Preference is given to those with experience in education, especially those interested in working in the field or the study of educational administration.

Programme of Study (Educational Administration)

2. Educational Psychology (Not offered in academic year 2012/2013)

Objectives

The Master of Education in Educational Psychology Programme specialises in learning and instruction. The primary goal is to understand better the factors that influence how human competence and performance change (learning) and what might be done to facilitate positive change (instruction). It is designed primarily as preparation for teaching in schools or other types of instructional and applied settings.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year programme for both full-time and part-time students. The design of the programme requires students to successfully complete a total of 4 compulsory 3-credit courses and 4 elective courses before working on a thesis in the second year.

Admission Requirements

Individuals who find information and insights gathered from learning and instruction useful in their life and work are highly recommended to take this programme. Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Preference is given to those with a background in psychology or those with experience in teaching or other educational roles. Individuals who are admitted but do not have relevant background in educational psychology will be requested to take supplementary courses.

3. Curriculum and Instruction

Objectives

The Master of Education in Curriculum and Instruction Programme aims at helping learners acquire the theories and techniques of curriculum development from different curriculum perspectives; explore models of teaching and learning; reflect upon issues regarding the commonplaces of curriculum: subject matter, teaching, learning, and the milieu; and most significant of all, put theory into practice. It is designed for teachers, educators and educational administrators who are interested in these fundamental education issues.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year programme for both full-time and part-time students. The design of the programme requires students to successfully complete a total of 4 compulsory 3-credit courses and 4 elective courses before working on a thesis in the second year.

Admission Requirements

Applicants must hold a university bachelor’s degree from a recognised university or equivalent. Relevant professional experience is not a pre-requisite, but preference will be given to applicants with substantial experience in education.

Programme of Study (Curriculum and Instruction)

4. School Counseling

Objectives

The Master of Education in School Counselling Programme aims at preparing students to become competent and professional counsellors in a variety of educational settings and their related networks, with an emphasis on school counselling techniques and services. Students graduating from this programme should be able to serve different clientele such as children and youths, teachers, and parents on a one-to-one or on a group basis. The components of this programme entail both theory and practice that are equally critical for successful counselling in real world situations. As the nature of counselling is person-oriented, ethical issues in the counselling profession will also be reviewed.

Programme Structure

This is a two-year programme for both full-time and part-time students. The design of the programme requires students to successfully complete a total of 7 compulsory 3-credit courses and 1 elective course before working on a thesis in the second year.

Admission Requirements

This programme is specially designed for individuals who are interested in the discipline of counselling or currently working in educational settings. Applicants must hold a recognised bachelor’s degree or equivalent. Preference is given to those with a background in school counselling or other relevant experiences. It should be noted that interested individuals who do not have substantial training in psychology or counselling may be requested to take supplementary courses.

5. Physical Education and Sport Studies

Objectives

The Master of Education in Physical Education and Sport Studies Programme aims to provide those who are interested in physical education and sports studies or who take up professional responsibilities in physical education, sport, fitness and recreation with an opportunity to enhance their knowledge and research abilities in sports.

Programme Structure

Applicants for the degree of Master of Education in Physical Education and Sport Studies will proceed through coursework and thesis work. This programme consists of a total of 24 credits in 8 courses (4 compulsory and 4 electives) at least and a thesis of an approved topic.

The compulsory and elective courses aim to enable students to develop comprehensive knowledge in physical education and sport studies. Upon satisfactory completion of the compulsory and elective courses and approval of the thesis proposal, students may start on the research component of the degree. The research activity will help students enhance their competency in a specified area by utilising knowledge and skills gained in the previous studies. Students are expected to complete the research project on an individual basis. During this phase of study, supervision will be provided by faculty staff.

Admission Requirements

Applicants admitted to the degree of Master of Education in Physical Education and Sport Studies should hold a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Macau; or should be a graduate of the University of Macau and hold the diploma in Education or qualifications considered equivalent to those specified by the University.

Programme of Study (Physical Education and Sport Studies)

6. Early Childhood Education and Human Development (Non Teaching Professionals offered while Teaching Professionals not offered in academic year 2012/2013)

Objectives:

In accordance with international trend in the field of early childhood education, the primary objective of this program is to upgrade professional knowledge and research competence of those interested in early childhood education, especially the early childhood practitioners in Macao SAR. It also aims at facilitating family education, promoting home-school partnership, enriching those who provide services for children in terms of their understanding of young children’s development and learning.

Programme Structure:

  1. The study comprises lecture and research-based thesis writing or professional development-based thesis writing.
  2. Courses in the programme include compulsory and elective courses. For successful completion of study, students should earn a total of 30 credits. Every course taken should be at least C+ and the average grading for all courses should not be lower than B. Only those students whose grades meet the above requirements will be granted permission to commence thesis writing.
  3. The duration of study is normally two to four years (including successful completion of courses, thesis writing and oral defense). Most taught courses will be conducted in the first year. Starting from the second year, thesis proposal (endorsed by the supervisor) can be submitted to the Faculty Dean/Chair of Faculty Management Board for approval. Thesis writing commences upon Dean’s approval.

Admission Requirements:

Aside from the requirements stated in part one, please also observe the following:

  1. Applicants who have passed the first round of the selection process have to attend an interview and prove their eligibility for the programme.
  2. Non-education degree holders should provide course descriptions for taught courses taken (equivalent to at least 6 credit hours) in disciplines such as Education, Psychology, Nutrition and Sociology for further consideration.

B. Postgraduate Certificate Programmes

1. Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Daytime)

Aims of the Programme

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (one-year) Programme gives priority to:

  1. Pre-service student teachers who aspire to work in secondary education, and
  2. In-service teachers who are currently teaching evening classes but have not received professional training.

The programme therefore strives to equip students with relevant knowledge of teaching and helps them apply educational theories in their actual teaching. It aims to improve students’ professional knowledge and skills in the field of education and to help them learn from their own practice. This programme will be continuously revised according to the development of society and will focus on training in the use of information technology (IT) in teaching in order to keep up with the rapid developments of both school and society.

Structure of the Programme

The disciplines included in this programme can be divided into three main categories:

  1. Foundations of Education

  3. Professional Knowledge

2. Postgraduate Certificate in Education (Evening)

Aims of the Programme

The Postgraduate Certificate of Education (two-year evening) Programme is aimed for in-service secondary-school teachers who have not received adequate professional training.? The programme therefore strives to equip students with relevant knowledge of teaching and helps them apply educational theory in their actual teaching.? It also aims to improve students’ professional knowledge and skills in the field of education, and to help them learn from their own practice.? This programme will be continuously revised according to the development of society and will focus on training in the use of information technology (IT) in teaching in order to keep up with the rapid developments of both school and society.
