Introduction

The Department of English offers high-quality teaching and research at an international standard that explores the historical and current role of English as a global medium of communication. Our students engage in the critical appreciation, interpretation and analysis of English texts in all genres from both linguistic and literary perspectives, and in translation between English and Chinese. We emphasise not only the acquisition of knowledge about English as a linguistic, literary and translational medium, but also the development and application of creative skills in English.

The Department’s undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offer a range of English-oriented courses for the students to choose from, including in linguistics, literature, translation studies, cultural studies, film, theatre and language. These are taught by an internationally acclaimed staff from various English-speaking cultures with diverse academic specialisations and interests.

Translation studies

The Department of English is committed to the teaching and research of Translation and Interpreting Studies. Undergraduate translation minor students complete courses in both written translation and oral interpreting. Students can choose from a range of elective courses: theory and practice of translation, translation of different genres, introductory interpreting courses, and so forth. Post-graduate students of translation and interpreting are offered courses in these areas as well as in research methods and research writing, translation technology and advanced courses in interpreting. Successful masters-degree theses and doctoral dissertations have been completed in these areas.

Literature

The Department of English is committed to the teaching and research of literature in English and this continues to be an area of emphasis. Undergraduate literature in English students complete courses in British literature, twentieth century literature, and contemporary literature in English. Students also choose from a range of elective courses in Shakespearean drama, Romantic and Victorian literature, nineteenth-century American literature, modernism, postcolonialism, film studies, literary criticism, and so forth. Post-graduate students of literature are offered courses in these areas as well as in Holocaust education and autobiography. Successful masters-degree theses and doctoral dissertations have been completed in these areas.

Linguistics

The Department of English is committed to the teaching of linguistics, including theoretical linguistics and especially English language use and acquisition in settings like greater China, including Macao. Undergraduate linguistics students take courses in both theoretical and applied linguistics. The department is particularly strong in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, and grammar, and has a highly productive relationship with the program in second-language acquisition. Masters-degree theses and/or doctoral dissertations have been completed in these areas.

Second language acquisition

The Department of English is committed to the research and teaching of second language acquisition, including cognitive and sociocultural approaches to language acquisition. Graduate second language acquisition students take courses focusing on both theoretical and practical aspects of language acquisition. The department is particularly strong in areas of cognition and language acquisition, language assessment, second language writing, second language listening, and conversation analysis, and has a highly productive relationship with the program in linguistics. Masters-degree theses and/or doctoral dissertations have been completed in these areas.
