The following is a list of workshop that had been conducted, and that had benefited many of the UM students academically.
- APA/MLA Documentation Styles
When you have done research for a paper you have written, you need to record that research. American Psychological Association (APA) and Modern Language Association (MLA) are two styles commonly used for such record-keeping. This workshop will give you hands-on opportunities to practice both how to do in-text citations and write bibliography.
- How to Avoid Plagiarism
-- Think you already know what plagiarism is? Think again. Chances are you may have committed it without even knowing it. Come to this workshop and find out how you can avoid plagiarism and learn how to summarize, quote, and paraphrase properly.
- Applying for Further Study
Do you want to continue your studies in a postgraduate program? Are you wondering how to write a personal statement of your academic achievements and a purpose statement of your academic interest? This workshop helps you learn how to write these statements.
- Basic Research Paper Structure
This workshop is suitable for students who need a refresher course on writing a basic research paper. We briefly discuss issues including the following: beginning your research, doing research, making an outline, writing the paper, and documenting your sources.
- Business Letter Writing
This workshop focuses on business letter formatting and discusses some differences between American and British business letters.
- Doing Research on the Internet
This introductory workshop helps students understand how to evaluate the credibility of web content. The workshop incorporates MLA and APA documentation styles for electronic sources.
- Effective Email Writing
Email is commonly used in university and the workplace. In this workshop, students will learn how to write proper emails, practice writing emails, and comment on each other's work. At the end of the workshop, students will be able to communicate with their professors effectively through emails.
- Effective Reading Strategies
Do you find yourselves very inefficient when you are reading? Are you bothered by the meanings of those unfamiliar words which you come across during reading? This workshop tells you how to understand an article through its structure and how
to hammer out the meanings of words through context clues.
- Getting Your Master’s Degree at UM: Sharing Session with In-Progress MA Students
This workshop is an information exchange session for MA students to familiarize themselves with the process of obtaining an MA degree at UM. The session includes primarily information on the MA thesis and the logistics of completing the project.
- Literature Essay Structure
In this workshop, you will learn the foundations of writing a literature essay. The focus is on writing effectively by knowing what should be included in the essay and how to structure it. Depending on the genre covered in your literature classes, the workshop may concentrate on poems, short stories, plays, and novels.
- MS Word Formatting
Everyone's used Word, but few people know all of its secrets. This workshop will explore proper indentation and tab stops; headers, footers, and page numbers; styles and headers; using outline view; spelling and grammar check; fonts; and margins.
- Presentation Skills
Do you get nervous when you speak in front of a group of people? This workshop will help you learn the techniques in overcoming nervousness and in preparing visual aids, thereby enhancing your oral communication skills.
- Proofreading Strategies
Proofreading is a process ignored by many students after finishing their essays. This workshop helps students “see” their essays from a reader’s point of view so that they can produce a more satisfactory essay with fewer grammatical mistakes and errors of other types.
- Resume and Cover Letter Writing

- Strategies to Avoid Writing Chinese English

Do you feel confuse when writing a research paper? Are you wondering how to keep the academic tone when writing your group project report? This workshop helps you learn the precision in word choice and flow of language in academic writing style. We will also help you identify and choose formal word through in-class practice.
- Writer’s Block & Basic Essay Structure
