Collaborative Researches in Macau Environment and City Development
Prof. Zhishi Wang, Faculty of Science and Technology, University of Macau

Since 1995, under the sponsorship by National Natural Science Foundation of China, University of Macau and Macau Foundation, University of Macau has been carrying out the collaborative research programme on Macau environment and city development.

The research partners are Tsinghua University, Beijing University and Guangzhou Research Institute of Geochemistry as well as Eco-Environmental Research Centre. The nine collaborative research projects have been finished.

National Natural Science Foundation, University of Macau and Macau Foundation jointly sponsored First and Second Symposia on Macau Environment and City Development which were held in March 1999 and 17 April 2000 in University of Macau, respectively. After these symposia, National Natural Science Foundation decided to sponsor seven new collaborative research projects together with University of Macau and Provisional Municipal Council of Macau, which are:

1. Control strategies for vehicular emission pollution control of Macau (2000-2002) sponsored by both University of Macau and National Natural Science Foundation of China (40045015)
2. Probabilistic analysis for uncertainty of water color remote sensing inversion (2000-2002) sponsored by both University of Macau and National Natural Science Foundation of China (49971058)
3. Environmental impact assessment of dredging and dumping in coastal waters surrounding Macau (2000-2002) sponsored by both University of Macau and National Natural Science Foundation of China (49976025)
4. Formation and impacts of high risky zones of non-degradable organic pollution in Pearl river estuary (2000-2002) sponsored by both University of Macau and National Natural Science Foundation of China (49972094)
5. Noise Pollution Assessment of Macau (1999-2001) sponsored by Provisional Municipal Council of Macau
6. Eco-3environmental Assessment of Nam Van Lake (2000-2002) sponsored by Provisional Municipal Council of Macau
7. Characterization and Control of Cooking Fume Pollution in Macau (2001-2003) sponsored by Provisional Municipal Council of Macau

The objectives of the symposium to be held are:

1. to review the achievements of the finished collaborative research projects on Macau environment and city development;
2. to coordinate the research activities of these new collaborative research projects;
3. to transfer the scientific knowledge gained from these finished collaborative research projects to the Macau society and to improve our understanding of the major environmental problems facing Macau;
4. to provide some kind of scientific basis for the SAR governmental decision-making process for Macau environment and city development.

The language used in the symposium is Chinese.
