UM certified under latest ISO 9001, 14001 standards

The University of Macau (UM) has been certified under ISO 9001: 2015 and ISO 14001: 2015, in recognition of the university’s continuous effort to improve service quality management and its commitment to environment protection. UM is the first higher education institution in Macao to obtain certification under the latest ISO management system standards.

UM’s Bachelor of Science in Computer Science programme fully accredited by HKIE

The Bachelor of Science in Computer Science (full-time) programme, offered by the University of Macau’s (UM) Faculty of Science and Technology (FST), has received full accreditation from the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE). Earlier this year, three other bachelor’s degree programmes in engineering offered by the FST, namely Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering, Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Computer Engineering, and Bachelor of Science in Electromechanical Engineering, also received full accreditation from the HKIE.

Macao team led by UM scholars wins 1 gold, 1 silver at International Mathematical Olympiad

A team of pre-college students from Macao, led by Dr Leong Ieng Tak and Mr Wan Lung Yam from the University of Macau (UM), Faculty of Science and Technology, Department of Mathematics, won a gold medal and a silver medal at the 57th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held in Hong Kong. This is the first time in 25 years that a team from Macao has won a gold medal at this competition.

UM professor to receive 3 awards from American Psychological Association

Dr Brian Hall from the Department of Psychology, Faculty of Social Sciences, University of Macau (UM), will receive three Early Career Awards from the American Psychological Association (APA) in August. The awards recognise psychological scientists in the early stages of their careers who have attained outstanding achievements or made outstanding contributions to professional clinical psychology, trauma psychology, or international psychology, respectively.

3 UM journals indexed in SCI and SSCI

Three journals from the University of Macau (UM), namely China Information, the International Journal of Biological Sciences, and Chinese Medicine, have been indexed in the Science Citation Index (SCI) and the Social Sciences Citation Index (SSCI), according to the 2016 Journal Citation Reports (JCR). China Information has an impact factor of 0.966, ranking No 8 among all the journals on area studies, and No 2 among all the journals on China studies.

Has been selected as one of China’s top ten academic materials in the area of arts and humanities in 2015.

Elected among the most influential poets in China

The UM team is comprised of assistant professor Zhu Yan and PhD student Chan Chi Hang from the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI; Prof U Seng Pan from the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Faculty of Science and Technology; and Vice Rector (Research) Rui Martins.

A research team from the University of Macau (UM) recently received the Best Paper Award at the European Solid-State Circuits Conference (ESSCIRC) 2015 held in Graz, Austria. The ESSCIRC is considered ‘Europe’s “Chip Olympics”’.

UM chair professor launches new book

A book launch for the Genesis of Confucius’s Analects, by Yang Yi, chair professor of the University of Macau’s (UM) Department of Chinese Language and Literature, was recently held in Beijing.

2013 - 2014

Assistant Professor Dr. Siu-wai Leung, Postgraduate students Sun Yunan and Zhou Yi, Chen Xi, Che Weng-si, Leong Kai-seng and Chan Weng-hang (Institute of Chinese Medical Sciences and State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine)

Adding dapagliflozin to conventional drugs for type 2 diabetes may improve glycemic control without causing significant weight gain, the research findings were reported by Reuters Health, and were also published on Medscape, a professional medical website widely used by clinicians around the world.

UM Rector Wei Zhao

A paper which is co-authored by his research team has been ranked among China’s 100 Most Influential International Papers (2012) and the Latest Most Influential Papers in China (on Biology), according to a recent issue of Statistical Data of Chinese S&T Papers 2013 released by the Institute of Scientific and Technical Information of China (ISTIC) under the Ministry of Science and Technology. Another paper co-authored by Rector Wei Zhao and Prof. Fu Xinwen from the University of Massachusetts received the Best Paper Award at the Eighth International Conference on Wireless Algorithms, Systems, and Applications (WASA 2013).

Prof. Simon S. M. Ho, UM Vice Rector (Academic Affairs)

has received two academic awards from two prestigious organizations: the KPMG Best Paper Award from the Gender Issues and Worklife Balance Section of the American Accounting Association (AAA), and the China Family Business Research Pioneer Award from the Chinese Private Enterprises Economic Research Association.

2012 - 2013

Prof. Ben U Seng Pan (Professor of the Department of Computer and Information Science; deputy director of the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI))

Prof. Ben U Seng Pan was named Chinese Scientist of the Year 2012 in recognition of his outstanding contributions in microelectronics. Prof. U is the first person from Macao to ever receive this honour.

He was elected Academician of the International Eurasian Academy of Sciences

Prof. Rui Martins, Prof. Elvis Mak Pui In, Dr. Matthew Law Man Kay, PhD student Yan Zushu (University of Macau’s (UM) State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI)

Their paper to be presented at the 60th International solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is “An Extremely Power-and-Area-Efficient Three-Stage Amplifier for LCD Display Drivers”. This will be UM’s first paper to be presented in the “ISSCC Student Research Preview” Session.

UM chips to showcase at Chip Olympics for the 3rd straight year They have co-developed the world’s smallest-power-and-area CMOS ZigBee receiver for short-range wireless applications. The paper on this project will be presented at the 60th International solid-State Circuits Conference (ISSCC) of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), to be held in San Francisco, United States, in February 2013.

Prof. Liu Zhiming (United Nations University—International Institute for Software Technology), Prof. Li Xiaoshan (Faculty of Science and Technology)

Their project, "rCOS Formal Model Driven Method for Software Development"**, received the second-class in the Natural Science Award category.**Prof. Li Xiaoshan from FST and the United Nations University—International Institute for Software Technology jointly submitted an application for this project.

Pro. Zhao Guoqiang, Dr.Jiao Yanpeng (Faculty of Law)

Dr.Jiao Yanpeng won the prize for "National Excellent PhD Thesis of Criminal Law Award".

Prof. Li Ping (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanity)

He was appointed as the first chief researcher in the discipline of history by Social Sciences Academic Press.

2011 - 2012

UM Rector Wei Zhao

He was conferred two honorary fellowships, honorary fellow of ACKM and honorary fellow of the Canadian Chartered Institute of Business Administration by the Asian College of Knowledge Management (ACKM)

Zhu Yan, Chan Chi Hang and Wong Si Seng (PhD students) and their supervisor Prof. Rui Martins, Prof. U Seng Pan and Dr. Sin Sai Weng (State-Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI)

They were all accepted by the Asian Solid-State Circuits Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, known as “Asia’s Chip Olympics”. One of the relevant papers also won the student design contest, ranking No. 1. Macao was the only region to achieve a paper acceptance rate of 100% at the conference, and all of the papers were from UM.

2010 - 2011

Prof. Zhu Shoutong (Head of the Department of Chinese, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

He received the Academic Research Grant for the first half of the year 2011 from the Cultural Affairs Bureau of Macao SAR.

Dr. Lewis Tam Hon Keung and master graduate Li Yufei (Faculty of Business Administration)

They received the GTA Best Paper Award at the Asian Finance Association 2011 International Conference.

2009 - 2010

UM Vice Rector (Research) Prof. Rui Martins, Prof. Ben U Seng Pan, Prof. Elvis Mak Pui In ( Faculty of Science and Technology )

Their projects, “Two-Step Channel Selection for Wireless Transmitter Front-Ends” and the “DC-offset Cancelled Programmable Gain Array for Low-voltage Wireless LAN System and Method Using the Same”, received two more U.S. patents.

UM Rector Wei Zhao

A research project on the Internet of Things, for which he is the chief scientist, was approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) for funding under the national “973 Programme”. He received an honorary doctorate from twelve universities in Portugal.

His paper on a new methodology for solving some reduced Fokker-Planck (FP) equations in high dimensions was published by the prestigious Annals of Physics.

He was elected president of the Systems, Man, and Cybernetics Society of IEEE.

Prof. Ben U Seng Pan(Faculty of Science and Technology)

He received the Commendation of Merit from the Macao SAR government.

Prof. Yuen Ka Veng (Faculty of Science and Technology )

He received the Young Investigator Award from the International Chinese Association for Computational Mechanics.

Chair Professor Yang Yi (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

He published four books on leading pre-Qin philosophers.

Prof. Tang Kaijian, Visiting Professor Wu Zhiliang (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities), and Mr. Jin Guoping, a professional translator and expert on the history of Macao

Their co-edited book, Chronicle of Macao, won the Book Nomination Award at the Chinese Government Award for Publishing 2011.

Dr. Angela Chang Wen Yu (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

She received a PhD scholarship from the Eurasia Pacific Uninet to study advertising appeals and strategy in Austria.

Dr. Oscar Sánchez Sibony (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

He received the “Robert C. Tucker/Stephen F. Cohen Prize” from the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies.

Prof. Christopher Kelen (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

He received the Newcastle Poetry Prize.

Prof. Tang Keng Pan and PhD student Li Jing (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

Their co-authored book on practical writing won the first prize at the International Conference on Practical Writing in Chinese and the 14th Annual Conference of the Chinese Institute for Practical Writing.

Prof. Lian Zhaotong(Faculty of Business Administration)

He received the Best Paper Award at the eighth International Conference on Service System and Service Management.

Prof. Shu Lianjie (Faculty of Business Administration)

He received the Honorable Mention Award at the International Conference on Industrial Engineering and Engineering Management 2010 of IEEE.

Prof. Fan Jianhong(Faculty of Law) and Prof. Alexandre Dias Pereira(Faculty of Law at the University of Coimbra, Portugal)

Their co-authored book Commercial and Economic Law in Macau (second edition) was published by Kluwer Law International, and was included in the International Encyclopedia of Commercial and Economic Law (volume 39).

Their research results presented at the 58th International Solid-State Circuits Conference of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) placed UM No. 15 in the world, No. 5 in Asia and No.1 in China, in the field of microelectronics.

Their project, “Capacitive-Coupling STATCOM and Its Control”, was granted a National Invention Patent by the State Intellectual Property Office of PRC.

Their project, “DC voltage Self-balancing Soft-switching Three-level Inverter”, was granted a National Patent for Utility Model, by the State Intellectual Property Office of PRC.

He received the 2009 IEEE MGA GOLD Achievement Award from IEEE. He received 2010 Outstanding Young Author Best Journal Paper Award from Circuits and Systems Society of IEEE.

2008 - 2009

Prof. U Seng Pan (Faculty of Science and Technology)

He received the Prize for Scientific and Technology Innovation 2010 of the Ho Leung Ho Lee Foundation. He was invited to serve as a resident Technical Program Committee member for the Analog Circuits and System of the IEEE Asian Solid-State Circuit Conference.

The “e-Home Healthcare” system has been successfully developed with the technical support from UM staff.

He was elected fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers.

His application for funding under the Cooperation Project of Overseas, Hong Kong and Macao Scholars was approved by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.

His work, Bayesian Methods for Structural Dynamics and Civil Engineering, was released internationally via John Wiley & Sons.

He was invited to be a member of the Chinese Journal of Library and Information Science Quarterly.

Prof. Tang Kaijian (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities )

He was awarded the “Chevalier de I’Ordre des Palmes Academiques” (Knight of the Order of Academic Palms) by the Ministry of Education of France in recognition of his outstanding contributions to research in French history and culture.

A new committee of the International Academy of Comparative Law has been officially recognized as a committee of the Academy in China (Macao), and several academic staff of the Faculty of Law were elected associate members of the academy.

He was appointed to the Editorial Review Board of the SAGE Publications journal Leadership for a period of five years.

Prof. Zeng Lingliang (Dean of the Faculty of Law)

He was elected to be one of the first “Masters of Legal Science in Contemporary China” by the editorial board of the Masters of Legal Science in Contemporary China. He was appointed as one of the first eternal peer reviewers for the Journal of Chinese Social Science.

Dr. Jennifer Lai Yuen Man (Faculty of Business Administration)

She received the 2008 Outstanding Reviewer Award (Organization Behavior Division) from the Academy of Management in the U.S.

Dr. Mathew Liu Tingchi (Faculty of Business Administration)

He received the Best Paper Award at the 2008 International Conference on Business and Information.

2006 - 2007

UM Vice Rector (Research) Prof. Rui Martins

He was the first from Macao to be elected fellow of IEEE.

Mr. Walter Wan Iat Meng ( Faculty of Science and Technology)

He received the Erasmus Mundus Scholarship from the European Commission to study an advanced master degree programme in the structural analysis of monuments and historical constructions at several universities in Europe. He was the first person from Macao to be granted this opportunity.

Prof. Tan See Kam (Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities )

He won the second prize for Faculty Paper at the Asia’s Future Initiative Forum.

Dr. Guo Jingzhi ( Faculty of Science and Technology)

He won the Best Paper Award at the IFIP International Conference on Research and Practical Issues of Enterprise Information Systems.

Prof. Tang Keng Pan ( Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities)

He won the Second Prize Paper Award at the 12th National Conference on Applicative Writing in 2007.

2005 - 2006

Prof. Robert Terpstra ( Faculty of Business Administration)

He received at the meeting of the Academy of International Business the Journal of International Business Studies (JIBS) Decade Award, which recognizes the most influential paper published in the JIBS over the past decade.
