1981 The private University of East Asia (UEA), UM’s predecessor, was founded
1984 UM graduated its first cohort of students and awarded the honorary doctorates for the first time
1988 UEA was acquired by the local government
1989 President of the Republic of Portugal Mario Soares visited UEA
1990 Undergraduate programmes changed from a three-year system to a four-year system
1991 UEA was renamed University of Macau and became a public university
1995 The first group of master’s students graduated
1997 President of the Republic of Portugal Jorge Sampaio visited UM
1997 The first PhD student graduated
1997 Undergraduate and master’s programmes gained recognition from the Ministry of Education of Portugal
1999 UM admitted the first group of undergraduates through the Recommended Direct Admission Scheme
1999 UM received the first research patent
2001 UM restructured its University Council and carried out Charter revision in an attempt to gradually implement an international governance model
2003 Vice President Zeng Qinghong visited UM
2006 The Legislative Assembly of the Macao SAR passed the Judicial Regime of the University of Macau, and the chief executive promulgated the Charter of the University of Macau. According to the charter, the University Council is the highest collegial organ of the university
2009 The National People’s Congress Standing Committee adopted a bill which approved the construction of UM’s new campus on Hengqin Island and authorised the Macao SAR to exercise jurisdiction over the new campus
2009 President Hu Jintao officiated at the new campus groundbreaking ceremony
2009 The University of Macau Development Foundation was founded
2010 Two residential colleges, namely East Asia College and Pearl Jubilee College, were founded.
2010 Premier Wen Jiabao visited UM
2011 The State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI and the State Key Laboratory of Quality Research in Chinese Medicine were inaugurated
2013 The new campus officially came under the jurisdiction of Macao SAR on 20 July
2013 Vice Premier of the State Council Wang Yang officiated at the inauguration ceremony for the new campus held on 5 November
2014 UM successfully completed relocation to the new campus
2014 The 2014/2015 academic year officially started on the new campus
2014 President Xi Jinping visited UM on 20 December
